THE STRANGER – WATCHING DEAD EMPIRES IN DECAY
Leyland Kirby is an intriguing (and hirsute,) beast, having been responsible for some of the more gratifyingly obscure releases of recent years. The stunning 4 hour epic, Sadly, The Future Is Not What It Was, was the culmination of a work which began as The Caretaker project – Kirby (real name James by the way,) looping dusty old records he discovered in a Stockport shop, referencing the past to reflect the future – and ended with his Leyland guise stretching the concept to it’s brilliant conclusion wit Sadly... This collection on Modern Love is a much more structured and regimented affair – caustic and cinematic textures with aptly crumbling and exploratory percussive elements. A startlingly emotive listen.
